At least 16 inmates of a prison in Cambodia were shot dead by security guards during an attempted jail break last Wednesday, officials said. Inmates at the T5 Correctional Centre in the eastern province of Kompong Cham took the warden and two police officers hostage as they visited a prison workshop. The inmates then grabbed three cars and tried to ram their way through the prison gates, said military police officer Kong Sopha. "Security guards started shooting to free the officials and 16 inmates died at the gate. Three other prisoners are lying wounded on the ground," Kong Sopha told Reuters by telephone. The prison warden and the two officers were also wounded in the incident, some 50 miles from the capital Phnom Penh. |
