| Annual turnover of Kansas prison guards surges to 33 percent |

Dramatic increases in health insurance premiums wiped out modest pay raises for uniformed guards at Kansas Department of Corrections prisons and nullified a bid to shrink the annual staff turnover rate surpassing 30 percent, officials said Monday. The revolving door at eight state prisons in Kansas rendered a personnel turnover rate of 33.1 percent in the last fiscal year, up from 29.7 percent one year earlier. The rate has climbed for six consecutive years, said Joe Norwood, secretary of the state corrections department. Norwood told and interim legislative committee the Kansas prison system had a higher turnover rate than Missouri, Nebraska, Colorado, Iowa and Texas. In the region, only Oklahoma pays a lower starting salary than Kansas. Oklahoma’s uniformed officer turnover rate stands at 36.1 percent annually, while Colorado has the most robust starting salary and a 16 percent rate of turnover. Read More. |
