Inside a rectangular hole in a wall on the first floor of a newly renovated building at 504 Mayflower Street is a time capsule stuffed with prison-related memorabilia. It was placed there Thursday morning by an inmate named Jason Macon, who folded himself into the opening about the size of a banker's box and disappeared into a dark cavity in a room that touches a cornerstone along the front of the building. He placed the copper box inside before climbing out and fastening the hole shut. Just months ago, on March 30, he and Department of Public Safety and Corrections maintenance manager Nathan Harvey discovered in that spot a 1939 time capsule long rumored to have been hidden somewhere in the vast building, the former home of the Louisiana School for the Deaf. Now that the site has been renovated by the corrections department, officials decided to place a new capsule in the space. Also known as "Building 10," the stately brick structure most recently housed the Baton Rouge Police Department. The site was originally developed in 1852 for Baton Rouge College, but the construction on Building 10, which first housed the Louisiana School for the Deaf, didn’t start until 1939, said corrections secretary Jimmy LeBlanc on Thursday.
