A manhunt for a missing Calhoun County (Mich.) jail inmate ended early last Tuesday with the escapee dead. Marvin Reinitz apparently drowned in the Battle Creek River while trying to elude authorities. Reinitz, 42, of Athens, was supposed to return to jail by 5:30 p.m. last Monday. Police began searching for him after he failed to show up. Just before 4 a.m. last Tuesday, Reinitz was spotted near Wagner and Emmett Street and a chase began. Police spotted Reinitz on the water's edge along the Battle Creek River. As officers approached, he moved into the center of the river. Ignoring orders to return, police say Reinitz appeared to lie down and submerged himself in chest-deep water. His body was found hours later near the Emmett Street bridge. Reinitz was part of the jail's work release program. He worked a residential construction job. He was allowed to leave the jail from about 7 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. Reinitz was serving a 90-day sentence for his second drunk driving offense. He was scheduled to be released on April 12th. |
