Joseph Markundu watched with wide eyes as the lives of two characters unfolded in front of him. Actors playing two teens demonstrated tough family life — leading one to skip school and use drugs and another to join a neighborhood gang. Their paths spiraled downward until they found themselves in prison. Markundu, 18, laughed with his friends when a harsh judge set a stiff penalty for one of the teens. It was too real.
