Credit-card scam enriches state prison inmates

State troopers are investigating a behind-bars scheme in which stolen credit card numbers were used to place hundreds of thousands of dollars on state prison inmates' commissary accounts.

Based on patterns of deposits, the online scam could involve up to $381,000 and as many as 46 inmates at 14 state prisons from early 2015 to mid-2016.

The investigation by the State Highway Patrol also has determined that $123,840 in suspicious deposits on inmate accounts subsequently was withdrawn and sent to others via cashier's checks.
