Tennessee prison officials want to more than double how much the state spends on treating hepatitis C, a potentially lethal liver disease that has reached epidemic levels within the correctional system. But that increase won't come close to covering the cost of treating the thousands of inmates suffering from hepatitis C. In April, a Tennessean investigation found 3,487 inmates suffering from hepatitis C, while only eight were receiving a treatment that, while expensive, almost always eliminates the disease. The investigation also cited documents that show the prison system's medical contract said hepatitis C had reached epidemic proportions by August 2015.
