Berkeley County inmates load logs onto a trailer in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew. October was a record-setting month of debris and trask pickup for the volunteer crew that formed in 2015. Berkeley County Sheriff's Office/provided Jail inmates who volunteer to pick up trash along Berkeley County's roadsides hit the streets in October with a lofty goal in mind after Hurricane Matthew. They raked in so much debris in the first few days after the storm that the Sheriff's Office challenged the work crew to pick up 100,000 pounds of tree limbs, bushes and garbage by the end of the month. The inmates got to work and brought in 117,000 pounds, a record for the crew that Sheriff Duane Lewis launched about a year ago. Read More. |
