Two inmates at a minimum-security facility in Bucks County (Pa.) will be charged with trying to bribe an officer with $500 to cover up the results of a urine test that showed one of the inmates had been using cocaine while on work release. District Attorney Diane E. Gibbons said last Wednesday that when Richard Michniewicz, 22, of Warminster Township and Jacob Crespo, 23, of Philadelphia offered the bribe to corrections officer Oliver Groman III, the officer instead notified his supervisor, who arranged for Groman to accept cash payments from the prisoners. ''Exactly what was supposed to happen did happen in this case,'' said Gibbons. ''Officer Groman used his head and responded the way he should have responded.'' Gibbons said she expected Michniewicz and Crespo to be arraigned last week on charges of bribery and conspiracy. They each face seven years in prison on the charges. Groman works at the Men's Community Corrections Center in Doylestown Township, a minimum-security facility where inmates serve on work release. Under the rules, they are permitted to leave during the day for jobs but must return at night. |
