Legislative committee discusses inmate charity fundraisers

Members of the state Post Audits subcommittee took aim at the Mount Olive correctional facility, where a legislative auditor said inmates selling fast food items to benefit charities present ethical and legal issues.

Kris Taylor, a certified public account, said an audit of the Mount Olive Correctional Complex was to determine whether corrections accurately safeguarded inmate trustee accounts, which they had.

However, Taylor said they found corrections facilitated inmate participation in fundraising activities that could pose a threat of legal and ethical issues.
