| Funding rejected for second women's prison |

A state plan to open a second women's prison faced a major setback Monday when lawmakers recommended denying money for the proposal. Oregon Corrections Director Colette Peters sought $3.8 million to get a former prison in Salem ready to accept inmates next year. Gov. Kate Brown's proposed budget for the next biennium includes $17.5 million to operate the prison on the grounds of the Oregon State Penitentiary. A legislative subcommittee recommended that the Emergency Board turn down the request. The Emergency Board meets when the Legislature is not in session to consider agency requests for money. The board is scheduled to take up the matter Wednesday. It would be unusual for the full board to reject a subcommittee recommendation. Read More. |
