The new K-9 handlers were recently recognized at a special graduation ceremony following their 13-week course which they were chosen for out of 167 applicants. It was during their course the handlers were matched with a K-9 with whom they will be working with for years to come. The unit now has 25 handlers, three supervisors and 30 K-9's assigned to patrol the 26 Department of Corrections institutions, 64 community corrections centers and assist with county jail requests as needed. DOC's Chief of Security talked at the graduation ceremony of the importance of K-9's in prison security and drug detection. There are also cell phone detecting dogs in the unit. Read More. |
