A San Jose, Calif., man died early Monday after he stopped breathing as correctional officers at Santa Clara County Jail tried to subdue him when he became combative, officials said. His identity was not released by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner's Office pending notification of next of kin. The 42-year-old man had been in custody just hours after a Sunday afternoon traffic accident in which he suffered head injuries. He was treated at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center for those injuries and booked late that evening into the jail on charges related to the traffic accident and three outstanding warrants related to drunken driving, battery and driving with a suspended license, said Department of Correction spokesman Mark Cursi. The man was in the booking area and handcuffed to a chair when he fell to the floor about 1 a.m., Cursi said. When medical staff members and correctional officers tried to help him, he became combative. Cursi said it was too early in the investigation to know what exact actions the officers took to control him or how the inmate became combative. Cursi said correctional officers immediately began resuscitation efforts. Paramedics arrived at 1:25 a.m. and took the man to Valley Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 1:45 a.m. The cause of death is pending results from an autopsy. |
