| Lawmakers want firm price on prison repairs |

CASPER – The state could be on the hook for anywhere between $87 million and $125 million to fix the Wyoming State Penitentiary, which was built on an old lake bed and is experiencing major structural issues, lawmakers were told Wednesday morning. The Joint Appropriations Committee, the group of lawmakers who draft the first version of the budget bill, heard about buckling floors, cracked walls and water draining into building foundations from other lawmakers who spent the last six months examining the 15-year-old prison that houses about 700 people. The JAC is reviewing agency budgets ahead of the 2017 legislative session, which begins Jan. 10. An engineering firm that studied the four prison buildings estimated it would cost $87.2 million to fix them by drilling supports 50 feet into the ground. Read More. |
