The Connecticut Department of Correction is investigating the death of an inmate at the York Correctional Institution in Niantic. At approximately 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 correctional staff conducting a routine tour observed an inmate in her cell with a ligature tied to her neck. She was the only inmate in the cell at the time. Correctional and medical staff immediately initiated emergency and life saving measures. The inmate was transported to local area hospital where she later passed away at 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 22, 2016 The inmate is identified as 32-year-old Monica Piette of Moodus, CT. She was charged with Criminal Violation of a Protective Order and was being held on a bond of $92,500. She had entered the York Correctional Institution on December 16, 2016. The exact manner and cause of death will be determined by the State Medical Examiner’s Office. The Department of Correction Security Division and the Connecticut State Police are investigating the death. |
