A 40-year-old Shreveport, La., man on a work-release detail from Caddo Correctional Center died just before noon Wednesday in what officials are calling an industrial accident at Riegel By-products Co., a chicken processing plant in the 500 block of Fortson Street in Shreveport. Kenneth Wayne Clinton of the 1600 block of Knox Street got his arm caught in a processor known as an auger and was pulled into the machine. The inmate, who was set to be released in July after serving a year for a probation violation, was a laborer at the rendering operation whose responsibilities included sweeping and shoveling, Caddo sheriff's spokeswoman Cindy Chadwick said. His job apparently was to shovel chicken parts that fell off the auger and put them back into the processor. An alarm on the processing machine automatically shut down the auger when the accident happened. That's when plant workers discovered Clinton, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Clinton's arm was pulled into the auger, up to his shoulder, twisting his head until it is believed his neck snapped, according to law enforcement officers who saw the scene. The Caddo coroner's office is investigating to determine the exact cause of death. |
