Donovan prison inmate possibly killed by cellmate, officials say

An Otay Mesa prison inmate who died after being found unresponsive on Christmas Day may have been killed by a cellmate, a prison official said Tuesday.

Robert Charleston, 36, was found in his cell at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility about 9:30 p.m. Staff started life-saving measures until paramedics arrived took him to an outside hospital, said Lt. Jennifer Davies, a spokeswoman for the prison.

Charleston died Tuesday. Officials did not say what led them to believe he was slain.
