| Prison spending held in check over past decade |

Madison — Wisconsin's corrections agency — once a key driver of new spending in this state — is no longer the leading edge of state government growth. Actual spending for the Department of Corrections today is essentially the same as it was a decade ago and spending is actually lower after accounting for inflation. And though the number of people in Wisconsin has grown modestly over those 10 years, the number of inmates held in state prisons and under state contracts has fallen, state figures show. Since Wisconsin's prison building boom in the 1990s, the Department of Corrections has been one of state taxpayers' top five costs, along with K-12 schools, health care, roads and universities. But state corrections officials now spend less than Wisconsin's main welfare agency for children and parents, once all sources of money are included. Read More. |
