A prisoner at McCormick County Correctional Institution got out of the housing area and set security, staff and law enforcement agencies on alert until he was found. The prisoner never left the facility's gate, according to S.C. Department of Corrections Governmental Services Manager Dexter Lee, and he was not trying to escape. "Staff were notified of an intruder throwing contraband into the facility," he said. There was no word on what the contraband was, and officers didn't find anyone nearby. Lee said a patrol vehicle monitoring the outside of the prison reported seeing someone outside the fence, which triggered the alert. At about 2:30 a.m. Sunday, the inmate got out of the living quarters -- and the prison responded by monitoring the two fences around the prison with spotlights until officers found him, said Maj. Bo Willis with the McCormick Police Department. Read More. |
