Hudson County inmates receive a second chance at an education and career

The inmates at the Hudson County Department of Corrections will now be able to get their General Education Development (GED) while serving out their time.

Because GED testing is digitized and correctional facilities do not allow inmates access to the Internet, prisoners could only study for the test prior to release, said Freeholder William O’Dea. Starting this year, however, inmates who want to get their GED will now be bused to the Hudson County Schools of Technology, which will provide the Web access to take the test, said O’Dea, who also serves on the school’s board of trustees.

“The goal of taking the test while in custody is to further ready an inmate for reintegration into society,” said James Kennelly, Hudson County spokesman.

So far, 15 inmates have signed up for the program.
