Most South Dakota prison inmate deaths are natural

According to the state Department of Corrections, Olson died Friday, Jan. 6 after a long illness. Since 2003, he had been serving a 15-year sentence for having sexual contact with a person under 16 years of age in Yankton County.

Olson spent his last days in “a comfort care setting in the Jameson Annex to the state penitentiary in Sioux Falls,” according to a news release from the office of Michael Winder, spokesman in Pierre for the Department of Corrections.

Olson, 5 feet, 11 inches tall, 200 pounds, with red hair and blue eyes, was one of about 500 inmates in the annex - including about three dozen federal prisoners, based on a recent DOC count.
