Retired Augusta County deputy dies in prison

STAUNTON - During his trial in March, where he was convicted on a felony gun charge, octogenarian George Stephenson Jr. told the judge that "confinement right now is a death sentence."

At his sentencing hearing In July, Stephenson, a former deputy with the Augusta County Sheriff's Office, was given an automatic five-year prison term. At that same hearing, defense attorney James Dungan argued to have the charge reduced in an effort to get Stephenson freed.

"Five years is simply saying you're going to die in prison," Dungan said.
