LAWYER Francis Lee Bailey summed up the verdict with the pithy phrase “Massachusetts has just burned another witch”. His client Albert DeSalvo had just been sentenced to life for sexual assault and burglary, 50 years ago today. But DeSalvo was hardly an innocent accused by paranoid villagers, as Bailey’s metaphor suggested. In fact Bailey’s client had earlier confessed to a series of 13 murders attributed to the “Boston Strangler”. However, police didn’t have enough evidence to bring DeSalvo to trial for those crimes.
