Authorities hope an autopsy will explain why a man who had jumped on an officer in booking later died in jail custody. An officer making a routine check found the inmate dead Saturday at 5 a.m. on the floor of his cell at Athens City Jail, said Athens police officials. The Limestone County Sheriff's Department is investigating. Sheriff's Department records indicate the inmate was Luis Garcia Martinez, 33, of Athens. Authorities do not know if he died of natural causes or if he had been taking any drugs, police said. Police arrested Martinez after a fight at a home on Friday. Officers responded to a 911 hang-up at the home and found a man who had been beaten. Police attempted to arrest Jose Coriano, 18, of Athens, for allegedly beating the man. When the officer attempted to arrest Coriano, the inmate (Martinez) jumped on the officer, police said. Police charged Martinez with obstructing government operations because he was hindering the arrest. Police charged Coriano with third-degree domestic violence. The inmate (Martinez) had been drinking and was laughing and cutting up when he was getting booked into jail, police officials said. Martinez and Coriano shared a cell. Coriano slept in the bunk and Martinez slept on the floor. |
