| New prisons will improve mental health care, says Alabama official |

A plan to build four new prisons and demolish existing facilities will improve security, staffing and mental health care for inmates, testified a top official at the Alabama Department of Corrections yesterday in a federal trial. The $800 million Alabama Prison Transformation Initiative failed in the legislature last year, but Gov. Robert Bentley is reviving it as a top priority for 2017. This week, attorneys representing the Alabama Department of Corrections are presenting evidence and testimony in a trial challenging the adequacy of mental health services. The lawsuit, brought by inmates with mental illness currently serving time in Alabama prisons, alleges that mental health care in state facilities is so inadequate that it violates the Constitutional ban on cruel and unusual punishment. Rates of suicide have been rising in recent years, and prisoners allege the department has not done enough to prevent suicide and self-harm. Read More. |
