Lockdown follows fight at county jail

Dauphin County (Pa.) Prison was partially locked down last week after two corrections officers suffered minor injuries in a fight with two maximum-security inmates.
Warden Dominick L. DeRose said the incident occurred around 1:30 a.m., when the officers were searching a 20-inmate maximum-security pod in the rear of the Swatara Twp. jail.
The inmates were being verbally abusive during the search, DeRose said, and attacked the officers when they attempted to move the prisoners to another area.
He said an officer in a glassed-in control room witnessed the scuffle and summoned help, after which control was restored within minutes.
"You had some inmates that acted up, and the staff did a great job of controlling them, isolating them and preventing it from escalating," DeRose said. "We're trying to figure out what caused [the inmates] to go off."
Of the two officers initially involved, one who fell against a door when an inmate attacked required four medical staples to the back of his head and four stitches under his eyebrow, where he likely was struck, DeRose said.
The other officer suffered a swollen hand. Both are expected to return to duty today, DeRose said.
Though fights and unruly behavior by inmates are a fact of life at the prison, DeRose said, it is unusual to have officers suffer injuries.
One of the inmates required stitches but was not seriously hurt, DeRose said. Besides the two inmates involved in the fight, two inmates were moved to more isolated disciplinary cells for being verbally abusive to officers during the fight, DeRose said.
Pending an investigation, which could lead to charges against the four inmates, DeRose said he would not release the names of the officers or the inmates involved.
