| Alabama lawmakers taking deeper look at $800 million prison plan |

It may not be a new plan, but it's a bold plan: Three new, regional prisons to replace 13 smaller, aging ones, plus replacement of the 75-year-old Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women. The Alabama Prison Transformation Initiative would mark a sharp change of course for a state that hasn't built a prison since the 1990s. Lawmakers say it will get serious consideration during their annual legislative session, which starts Tuesday. The money, $800 million, would come from a bond issue that the state would pay off over 30 years at a total cost of $1.5 billion. Read More. |
