Twelve Tangipahoa Parish jail inmates were booked on murder counts Tuesday in the killing of another inmate at the end of January.

Tommy Joe Smith, 40, of Independence, arrived at the jail on Jan. 30, brought in on a probation violation. He was placed in a dorm with other inmates, and was killed there.

A Sheriff's Office investigation found that inmates got into altercations with Smith when he tried to "establish himself in a bunk on the second floor." Inmates told him he wasn't welcome, but even after Smith tried to relocate to a different part of the dorm, inmates again told him to move.

When he tried to notify the pod deputy, Smith was attacked by an inmate from behind, the Sheriff's Office maintains. As he turned to defend himself, he was jumped by several inmates. Other inmates described the attack, which occurred in the dark, as a "shark feeding frenzy," the Sheriff's Office said in a news release.
