A Midlands woman, Tabitha, 26, speaks to her new canine companion in soft, affectionate tones. She gently scratches him behind the ears. The large, mixed-breed dog, who goes by the name Chance, was released from Leath Correctional Institution on Monday to live with Tabitha. She has adopted him through the Humane Society of Greenwood and Leath's Pawsitive Prison Program. Tabitha has Chance for emotional support. Chance is the first dog to complete the new foster program allowing inmates in Greenwood County to train shelter dogs to help them get adopted. "The first day I saw him, I said, 'That's my dog,'" Tabitha said. Tabitha said she has tried to commit suicide before and copes with depression and anxiety. She said she is also on the road to recovering from substance abuse. Humane Society of Greenwood welcomes donations to purchase necessary supplies for care and training of dogs in the Pawsitive Prison Program. Contributions are set aside in a restricted fund solely for this program. Make checks payable to the Humane Society of Greenwood, with Pawsitive Prison Program in the memo line, Post Office Box 49776, Greenwood, SC 29649. "I'm OK with sharing this," Tabitha said. "It may help someone else." Read More. |
