| Mother of beaten juvenile inmate files lawsuit |

The mother of a youth who was beaten by other inmates at the Hawaii Youth Correctional Facility has filed a lawsuit against the facility. The Circuit Court lawsuit filed by Johanna Afoa, mother of Hansen Peatro, seeks damages to be determined at trial. The lawsuit said Peatro suffered a broken jaw and other internal injuries that required surgery and hospitalization after he was attacked by unnamed residents on June 17. The lawsuit alleges that state officials were negligent in failing to segregate its residents from older, more violent wards. |
