Authorities hope an autopsy will explain why a man police said jumped on an officer and laughed during booking died on the floor of his jail cell. An officer making a routine check found Luis Garcia Martinez, 33, of Athens, Ala., dead Saturday at 5 a.m., police Capt. Marty Bruce said. The Limestone County (Ala.) Sheriff's Department is investigating. Bruce said authorities do not know if Martinez died of natural causes or if he had been taking drugs. Police arrested Martinez Friday at 11:55 p.m. after a fight at a home where officers responded to a 911 hang-up and found a man who had been beaten. An officer tried to arrest Jose Coriano, 18, of Athens, for allegedly beating the man, but Martinez jumped on the officer, Bruce said. Police charged Martinez with obstructing government operations because he was hindering the arrest. They charged Coriano with third-degree domestic violence. "The inmate (Martinez) had been drinking," Bruce said. "He was laughing and cutting up when he was getting booked into jail." Authorities sent Martinez's body to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences. |
