| Ward says he's open to ideas but says new prisons needed |

Sen. Cam Ward and Corrections Commissioner Jeff Dunn stressed the urgency of problems in Alabama's violent, understaffed and overfilled prisons at a public hearing Wednesday on a plan to build new prisons. Opponents of the plan also spoke at the hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, which decided not vote on the bill Wednesday to allow more time for negotiations. Ward, the Judiciary chairman and sponsor of the bill, told his colleagues he was open to new ideas but not to inaction. "I want to come with the best idea possible," Ward, R-Alabaster, said. "I come to you in a way that's not meant to be adversarial. I come to you in a bipartisan effort on what we can do to truly move us forward. Read More. |
