| New program for juvenile offenders available statewide |

Therapists who can meet with families in their homes on evenings and weekends now are available to help kids who have been in trouble with the law to change their behavior, Gov. Sam Brownback and corrections officials announced in Salina on Wednesday. Functional Family Therapy, an evidence-based approach for juvenile offenders and their families that is designed to keep juveniles from having to be placed out of the home, is part of a reform to the state’s juvenile justice system legislators passed last year. The state is contracting with Cornerstones of Care, a Kansas City-based agency, to provide a combination of therapy and supervision for juvenile offenders in 29 counties in northeast and central Kansas and EmberHope to provide the service in western Kansas. “Here’s somebody that’s particularly at an early age, and you really want to make sure you’re trying to get the person headed in the right direction as much as possible,” Brownback said.
