| Prison guards picket outside Auburn Correctional, raise concerns about violence inside |

The New York State Correctional Officers union says assaults on prison staff have increased nearly 60% over the past five years and contraband, including drugs and weapons, has increased by 50%. "The drugs, the heavy gang activity along with the fabricated weapons inside the facilities are escalating to a point where it is beyond control. We don't have any administrative support here or at some other facilities across the state," said Correctional Officers union president Michael Powers as he stood outside Auburn Correctional. Dozens of officers picketed outside Auburn Correctional today. Powers said they wanted to call attention to what the union describes as a lack of support from the administration, low employee morale and a weakened discipline system for inmates who break prison rules.
