A man being held in the Buchanan County (Mo.) jail on a felony sexual assault charge apparently tried to escape Thursday while being transported to a court hearing, but instead ran right back into the long, waiting arms of the law. The Sheriff's Department won't say who told officers that Jeremiah Searles, 24, might try to escape from marshals while they were taking him from the jail to county courthouse across the street. But around 9:45 a.m., Searles broke away from authorities outside the Law Enforcement Center and ran to what he thought was his getaway van. Inside, deputies were waiting for him. "The van was there, and he probably ran six or seven yards to the van and got in and when he got into the van, it was not what he suspected," Sheriff Mike Strong said. The Sheriff's Department had alerted deputies, court marshals and drug task force investigators that Searles might try to escape, he said. "We had an inkling this would happen," Strong said. "Everybody was in on it except him." Searles has been in custody since March 7 on a state deviant sexual assault charge. |
