A Tarrant County man who suffocated a 4-month-old infant during a killing spree almost three decades ago apologized several times to the family of his victims before he was executed Tuesday evening.

James Bigby, 61, was put to death at the Huntsville “Walls” Unit for the 1987 murders of 26-year-old Michael Trekell and his son, Jayson, at their home in Arlington on Christmas Eve. Bigby confessed to the slayings and told authorities he did it because he felt Trekell and two other men were conspiring with his former employer, Frito Lay, to deny paying Bigby for a worker’s compensation claim.

Bigby also killed the other two men, Calvin Crane Jr., 38, and Frank Johnson, 33, that same day, but he was never tried for those murders.

Bigby, who released a written statement in which he blamed Frito Lay for causing him to commit the murders before his execution, watched through two pairs of eyeglasses as his victims’ family members filed into the witness room of the death chamber Tuesday shortly after 6 p.m.
