Two Montgomery County inmates released in error

Two inmates were inadvertently released from the Montgomery County (Ala.) Jail in back-to-back incidents during the past 10 days. One man was sentenced last year to life in prison for attempted murder, and the other is wanted for questioning in a February homicide.
They both remain at large.
Sheriff D.T. Marshall said a "clerical error" allowed Bradley Demetrius Kenner, 20, to walk out of the county jail March 28, just five months into a life sentence.
In the second incident, which occurred Thursday, deputies released Darryl Curtis Clayton, 27, on $500 bond after he gave them a false name when booked on marijuana possession.
Clayton, who told deputies his name was Martez Giles, is wanted as a "person of interest" in the Feb. 2 slaying of 73-year-old John Timmons, said Lt. Huey Thornton, a Montgomery Police spokesman. He is also wanted on warrants in both Montgomery and Autauga counties.
"Now we're looking for the people who bailed him out," Thornton said. "They would have known he was in there under a false name and bailing him out would constitute hindering prosecution."
An employee at J.J.'s Rapid Bail Bonds, the company Marshall said Clayton's bond was posted through, declined comment Friday.
Marshall said the false name was discovered when jail personnel ran Clayton's fingerprints through their computer system Friday morning. Deputies and city police officers are now looking for him.
Deputies, along with the U.S. Marshals, are also searching for Kenner, he said.
To make matters worse, the sheriff said, deputies showed up at Kenner's Belvedere Drive address a few days after his release looking for his brother - and spoke to Kenner about his brother's whereabouts.
"My information indicates the warrant (deputies) saw him and talked to him," Marshall said. "They just weren't aware that he needed to be in jail."
At the time he was released, Kenner was being held at the county jail awaiting his transfer to a state facility. He pleaded guilty in October to attempted murder, first-degree burglary and theft of property.
Although the paperwork on Kenner's conviction and sentence was sent to the Alabama Department of Corrections in November, his transfer never went through.
Marshall said jail officials received a teletype from DOC officials on March 28 saying to release Kenner from a parole violation charge he was being held on. A lieutenant at the jail overlooked the court documents in Kenner's file that detailed his sentence and released him.
Marshall said internal affairs investigators are looking into the incident.
The Sheriff's Office is also trying to find out why Kenner was never picked up by the state corrections department.
Brian Corbett, a DOC spokesman, did not immediately return phone calls Friday.
