| No prison expansion expected |

SPRINGFIELD – The chairwoman of the House Institutions and Corrections Committee said emphatically Monday that expansion of the state prison in Springfield was “not on the table.” Rep. Alice Emmons, D-Springfield, told a legislative breakfast meeting at the Holiday Inn Express that her committee was also opposed to Gov. Phil Scott’s plan to close the state prison in Windsor, citing high per-inmate costs. Emmons said that her committee has been asking the Department of Corrections to cut its budget, not expand it, and building a 100-bed addition to the Springfield prison was a very expensive idea. Town Manager Tom Yennerell asked Emmons about the persistent rumor about expansion at the Springfield prison, which opened in 2003 and currently holds 350 inmates. Read More. |
