A 33-year-old inmate was killed in a fight with another inmate inside a locked cell at Gouverneur Correctional Facility's maximum-security confinement unit, authorities said. According to New York State Police, officers responding to a disturbance found John Pearson of New York City lying in the cell shortly before 4:30 p.m. Thursday. He was taken to E.J. Noble Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy showed he was asphyxiated. Inmate James Davis, 23, of New York City, who was sharing the cell with Pearson, was transferred to Upstate Correctional Facility in Malone. A prison spokeswoman said he faces disciplinary infractions for violent conduct, assault and fighting. The police investigation into the homicide was continuing. Both men were serving sentences for selling drugs. Gouverneur is 96 miles northeast of Syracuse. |
