Senator wants monthly information from Department of Corrections |

Omaha Sen. John McCollister would like to know the number of offenders who are at or past their prison parole eligibility dates, and who have not received appropriate programming to help them re-enter Nebraska communities. That number has become an issue with prison crowding and the need to enable offenders to get needed classes. McCollister introduced a bill (LB562) that would require a monthly report that would provide the number and type of vacant behavioral health positions department-wide and for each prison. And it would give the number of inmates who have achieved community-custody status, but who are still not in a community-custody facility. The required report would be made available to the Legislature's Appropriations and Judiciary committees, Doug Koebernick, the inspector general for Corrections, and Ombudsman Marshall Lux.
