Jefferson County Sheriff's hiring practices may be taken out from under federal oversight |

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office could soon find that after 35 years it will no longer have its hiring practices under the microscope of a federal judge. Attorneys for the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office last week reached an agreement with plaintiffs and the U.S. Department of Justice in a 1975-era lawsuit who claimed Jefferson County, including the sheriff's office, was discriminating in its hiring of blacks and women. The agreement calls for the sheriff's office to be removed from the requirements under the consent decree, except for the responsibility to have an affirmative action officer, record keeping, and certain reporting obligations.
