| Officials look at expanding jail’s mental health treatment pods |

With many jails and prisons now inadvertently serving as mental health facilities, San Mateo County officials are looking to expand a new multi-disciplinary program that encourages inmates to participate in receiving vital treatment. In an effort to treat men and women with serious mental illness who are in custody of the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, a collaborative program between law enforcement and county health workers is underway. The county established mental health pods, specialty quarters where qualifying inmates live and receive more intensive psychiatric treatment. The voluntary program was initially rolled out for women at the Maple Street Correctional Facility in August, then in January for men at a portion of the Maguire jail in downtown Redwood City. Last week, representatives with the Sheriff’s Office and Health System approached the Board of Supervisors to provide an update on the program and their plans to make improvements at the men’s mental health pods. “It’s been tremendous. It allows one location where we can make sure they get the mental health services that they need, in an environment where it’s conducive to the improvement of their condition,” Sheriff Carlos Bolanos said after the meeting.
