MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Prosecutors say a prison inmate has been charged with first-degree murder in the beating death of his cellmate.

The Shelby County district attorney’s office says 36-year-old Danielle Smith, also known as Daniel Smith, is charged with killing 22-year-old Lenord Nelson, also known as Leonard Nelson, in their cell at the county’s penal farm May 31.

Investigators say Nelson’s throat was slit with a razor. Investigators initially were told Nelson had committed suicide, but evidence showed there was an altercation and Nelson had been dead for hours in the cell with Smith.

An autopsy showed Nelson died of blunt force trauma to the head and neck and that his neck wound likely was inflicted after death.
