| New York prisons see jump in older inmates |

ALBANY — New York's population of inmates older than age 50 has risen sharply over the past decade. The increase in the graying segment of the prison population came even though the overall number of felons held behind bars in New York has been dropping, according to an audit by State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli's office. While his office found no available data for how much money is spent to care for inmates based on their age range, the audit did note that health care costs for prisoners rose by 20.4 percent in the last three years.
