DOC training staff to safely defuse incidents involving mentally ill inmates

A training grant awarded to the West Virginia Division of Corrections will allow crisis intervention teams to learn how to safely defuse and de-escalate incidents involving inmates with mental illness.

DOC applied for the technical assistance grant from the National Institute of Corrections last year. Through it, an initial class of correctional officers will receive 40 hours of intensive training adapted from the Memphis Model for crisis intervention.

The state’s prison system is also providing mental health first aid training, developed by the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, for all correctional officers and facility staff. The training, which began in March, complements the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training scheduled for May.
