| Teen killer from York County freed at 60 years old |

A man who was previously serving a mandatory life sentence for murdering his ex-girlfriend as a teenager has been paroled, making him the first so-called “juvenile lifer” from York County to be released from prison since a significant ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court. Scott Griffin, 60, of Spring Garden Township, was found guilty of first-degree murder for fatally shooting Linda Hagens, 17, on Jan. 11, 1974. He was 16. Griffin was paroled on March 30, said Amy Worden, press secretary for the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, in an email. In 2012, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that it’s unconstitutional to impose automatic life sentences for those who commit crimes before turning 18. Last year, the justices made that decision retroactive, allowing those individuals to challenge their punishment. So in December, Griffin was resentenced to serve 43 years to life, which made him almost immediately eligible for parole. Read More. |
