New Mexico Corrections Secretary Joe Williams has received a vote of no confidence from unionized Corrections Department officers. They're demanding that he be fired. Corrections Department spokesman Tia Bland says Williams won't step down. The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees said Sunday that Williams has lost the union's trust. The union says that has made it impossible to negotiate in good faith with Williams' administration over any substantive issues. Bland says Williams still wants to work with the union. Corrections union workers are upset that state lawmakers have approved only a one-point-75 percent pay increase for them. Bland says Williams did not oppose a higher pay raise proposed in a separate bill. |
