| WV prison, jail staff to receive mental health, crisis training |

In a state that has lacked crisis intervention training for law enforcement, staff at West Virginia’s prisons and jails will soon receive training related to crisis intervention and mental health. Sixty officers from an initial class will undergo 40 hours of crisis intervention training in May, according to a news release from Lawrence Messina, a spokesman for the Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety. The Division of Corrections will send 30 officers, and the regional jail system will send another 30, Messina wrote in an email. The Memphis Police Department joined health professionals, advocates and university researchers to develop the Crisis Intervention Team approach, otherwise known as the Memphis Model.
