CHICAGO — Police on Wednesday announced charges against a 37-year-old man in connection with the fatal shooting of a veteran Cook County judge and the wounding of his companion in what detectives believe was a "targeted robbery." Associate Judge Raymond Myles, who presided over criminal cases, was fatally shot and his 52-year-old girlfriend was seriously wounded early Monday morning outside the judge's home on Chicago's South Side. The suspect, Joshua Smith, was charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, and obstruction of justice, police said. Deputy Chief Melissa Staples added that police are searching for other suspects who they believe were involved in the fatal shooting and attempted robbery. Smith was convicted of armed robbery in 2003, and served six years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. "The motive of this crime is robbery, which we do not believe is random," said Staples, who declined to reveal why the judge and his girlfriend were targeted. "Nor do we believe Smith acted alone."
