Pinellas inmate faces additional charges after detectives connect him to sexual assault

A man is facing sexual battery charges after detectives connected him to an assault of a woman behind a St. Petersburg business last month, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.

Joseph Simpson, 39, was already in custody at the Pinellas County Jail for unrelated grand theft auto and burglary charges when detectives added the aggravated battery and attempted sexual battery charges on Wednesday.

Simpson was initially arrested on March 31 for burglary of an unoccupied structure and three counts grand theft motor vehicle, jail records show. But when an unidentified 50-year-old woman came forward on April 10 and reported that someone had physically and sexually battered her on March 30, detectives eventually identified Simpson as the suspect.
